A Model For Guiding Foster Children In The Development Of Social Behaviour (A Study at Al Ikhlas Orphanage in Kendari City)

Abstract

This study aims to identify the patterns of foster child guidance in the development of social behaviour at the Al Ikhlas Orphanage in Kendari City and to identify the supporting and inhibiting factors affecting these patterns at the Al Ikhlas Orphanage in Kendari City. This study employed a qualitative research design. Informants were selected using purposive sampling, with the informants comprising the head of the orphanage, foster parents (carers) and the foster children. The data sources used in this study were primary and secondary data. The data collection techniques employed were observation, interviews and documentation. The data analysis technique involved data/information collection, data reduction, data presentation and drawing conclusions. The results of this study indicate that the patterns of guidance for foster children in the development of social behaviour at the Al-Ikhlas Orphanage in Kendari City involve character building and social discipline, the fostering of social interaction, the instilling of moral and ethical values, and the development of independence and social responsibility. Meanwhile, the supporting and inhibiting factors in the patterns of fostering foster children’s social behaviour at the Al-Ikhlas Orphanage in Kendari City are, as supporting factors, public attention, government attention and a strategic location. The inhibiting factors are differences in the behaviour of the children in care, differences in their social backgrounds prior to entering the home, their ability to adapt to a new environment, and differences in their character and cognitive abilities.
